Genie Bottle Pendant

A chainmaille genie bottle to safe guard your dreams and answer your wishes!

Remember "I dream of Jeannie"?  What fun that was!  Quite a number of impressive icons came from that show, and the one stayed clearly in my memory is the genie bottle on the beach!  The curvy shape, the vivid colors, and the ancient patterns, yeah I'm talking about the bottle!!!

To re-create the iconic genie bottle in chainmaille takes a bit of imagination and lots of experimentation.  And once again, the ever versatile Whirlybird weave answered my call!

This genie bottle is not like any other genie bottle; its colors are vibrant and playful, its shape airy and modern; it hangs on the chain with a slight tilt, like a mischievous genie ready to take you along for some marvelous adventure!

The chainmaille Genie Bottle pendant is 2 inches long, made with bright and anodized aluminum jump rings and Swarovski crystals; the tassel is 1 1/2 inches long in stainless steel; and the bottle hangs on a 32-inch long stainless steel diamond-cut curb chain.

Tripoli Triangle Bracelet

Took me quite a while, but it's well worth it...........

Based on Scott David Plumlee's ingenious design of Tripoli Triangle, six of the Tripoli Triangle units are simply connected end to end.  I tried out a few other ways to link them up; in the end, I chose the easiest one; no muss, no fuss; nothing to distract attention from the intricate, lacy design of each little triangle.

The lovely bracelet shows off the unique combination of Byzantine and Mobius, the two ever popular chainmaille weaves.  With every movement of the wrist, each tiny jump ring of the Tripoli points reflects the light in all directions, giving a soft sparkle that's the trade mark of Byzantine weave.

Each of the six Tripoli Triangles is an equilateral triangle measuring 1 1/8 inches on each side.  The total length of the bracelet, including the handcrafted heart clasp in natural niobium, is 7 1/2 inches, with a thin profile at 3/16th of an inch.  All jump rings are bright aluminum for light weight and no maintenance required.

Tripoli Triangle

I must have been drugged.... for 2 days straight.... by this little triangle!!!

It's another shameless copy of Scott David Plumlee's masterful play on Byzantine weave.  From the first moment I saw it, I was hooked; yet it took me nearly a year to finally make a successful Tripoli Triangle.

No, it's not hard.  Anyone who's done Byzantine and Mobius can figure out how to make this.  But the devil is in the details.  Took me a while to find just the right size rings to create a sturdy yet still flexible chainmaille pendant.  Mind you, this is not a sculpture:-)

Before getting this one done just right, I went thru several iterations; I like some guess work with some math when it comes to chainamille...:-)  This one is my favorite so far; it has 2 ring sizes: 19 swg, BA, wrapped on 1/8" mandrel, actual AR about 3.35; large rings are 16 swg, BA also, wrapped on 7/32" mandrel.  Won't surprise me these are not the sizes that Master Plumlee used, but this combination works for me.  So I made another one, and another, one more, etc.  Now I'm tempted to try his Sequential Triangle bracelet......

This little triangle is totally addictive!

Fireman's Hold 4 Sheet

So this may not seem anything special, but it IS to me:-)

I can't remember the last time a mere 52-ring chainmaille patch took me over 5 hours to finish.  It's almost embarrassing to admit it...  But I would have continued on some more if it weren't for the damn tax returns...

The weave is Fireman's Hold 4 Sheet as documented in MAIL's weave library, consisting of 4 units of Fireman's Hold 4.

A single unit of Fireman's Hold 4 is not too bad.  But when I got to the 16th cell, it nearly bit my head off!  Yes, that's how tough it is!

But the end result is quite lovely:-)  Rigid enough to be a sculpture, it can be turned into a pin, a pendant, or a hair clip; but probably not a button... (I've been somewhat obsessed with chainmaille buttons lately:-)

Fish a la Byzantine

A "Fish" in your hand.... :-)

Here's something whimsical to follow you everyday in your hand, your pocket, handbag, etc... Inspired by Scott D. Plumlee's designs, this fun little fish is outlined in chainmaille Byzantine weave, and connected to a moon shaped split ring. The fish is 2 1/4 inches long from lips to tail, 1 1/2 inches wide from fin to fin, and 3/8 inch thick, decorated with blue glass beads.

This cute fish fits perfectly in your palm, is not intrusive in your jean pocket, The metal used for the fish is bright aluminum, which is light weight and requires no maintenance. Another chainmaille example of form follows function!

Peppermint Candies

I've always had a fondness for Whirlybird. Not hard to tell, it's right on my avatar:-)  Its endless applications, or "Apps" for the i-generation, make it the Houdini of maille weaves! 

These cuties can pass by as peppermint candies, with rainbow colors! They are yummy enough you would want to take a bite out of them! My Peppermint Candies earrings are fun and cool to wear, just like the real candies:-)


The chainmaille pattern used here is Whirlybird, published by Noldolantë of Maille Artisans International League; it is an amazing combination of symmetry and whimsy. I selected anodized niobium and bright aluminum to create these earrings for maximum pinwheel effect! Wait till you hold them between your fingers; they have such a lovely tactile feel that they are almost bouncy:-)

Each Peppermint Candy measures 3/4 inch across, 7/16 inch thick, hangs about 7/8 inch long from the bottom of the ear wire to the bottom of the earring.

Rainbow Crossing

I've always admired Rebeca Mojica's chainamaille work; that's why when her book "Chained" was published, it created a major buzz in our world of maille unlike any other had. Rightfully so, her book is a must have for anyone and everyone wanting to start, already mastered at, or just interested in the art of making chainmaille jewelry.

There are so many awesome designs in the book; but my love at first sight is the Japanese Cross pendant, right on the front cover.  Simple, Elegant, the spirit of Zen!  I recreated her design in this very colorful version; I called it Rainbow Crossing.

The wide array of colors bring out the fun and playful side of the Japanese weave, one of my favorite!  Instead of prim and proper, my Rainbow Crossing takes your eyes all over the inner working of the weave, following the brilliant hues, all the way up the cherry red cord, you cannot help but smile!!

Made of jump rings of multi colors enameled copper, bright aluminum, and stainless steel, the pendant measures at 1.5 inches long, 1.25 inches across, and is strung on a cherry red rubber cord, closes with a dainty sterling silver clasp.  The cord is 2mm thick, 18 inches long.

I feel honored!  Almost a bit guilty, for I'm already having too much fun mailling!  But it's still nice to have a pat on the back by those I respect:-)

Chainmaille Watch Band in Oops Weave

I've long had an obsession with watch bands, handmade watch band, that is, of course!

Back in my bead weaving days, I made a free form (mostly peyote-based) watch band, in many shades and shapes of blue beads.  That tickled me for a very long time!  Got it?  A long "time"?!! :-)

Fast forward.  Watch bands have also been a popular application (hey, an app!) for chainmaille.  Those tiny rings are perfect attachment to any watch face with mini tension bars for changing watch bands.

Just about any basic chainmaille weaves can be used for watch bands, with the key being a weave that is dense but low profile, flexible but sturdy.  As I searched and researched, the winner in my book is still my all time favorite, Oops!  AKA, European 4 in 1 Unbalanced.

Oops weave is very fluid, fabric-like, yet very strong to stand up to daily wear and tear.

Speaking of daily wear, for the band closure, I selected a 5-point tube slider for easy on and off.  The slider also has a small magnet built inside the ends of the tube to help "guide and attract" the opposite end in place.

Oh, and I love this nice and BIG watch face, with BIG numbers.  Yes, it measures over 1 1/2" across.  With all this surface area, it's only 1/4" in thickness.  Not ultra thin, but thin and light weight enough to fit comfortably over the wrist.

The total length for the watch and band is right at 7", with the Oops band at 1" wide, and the tube slider closed at 1 1/8" wide.  The Oops band can be slightly lengthened at 3/16" increment to fit a bigger wrist.

The metal used for the chainmaille band is bright aluminum, a light weight, no maintenance metal.  The material of the tube slider is plated in platinum color.  The watch face has a stainless steel case, acrylic window, with quartz movement.

Bollywood by way of Byzantine

If you already speak Maillese (yep, that's a word now, in my dictionary), you may think, "Byzantine? Where?"  Ahh, but they're there; see them?  This is a version of the Staggered Byzantine family that hit the sweet spot right in between Staggered Byzantine Halves and Sheet.  So maybe, a one-row sheet? Hee hee...

Even if you're not a maille-head, I hope you'll still find this bracelet a joy to hold and wear, just for the pure delight of the curves, the colors, and the gentle hug on your wrist.

Made of small, light weight bright aluminum jump rings, the frame work of the bracelet alone is no small feat, consisting of over 480 jump rings, while remaining flexible and almost elastic.

For as much as I believe less is more, sometimes, more is just so much better:-)  I could never resist adding pops of colors here and there.  And if you don't mind me saying, the random combination of red and gold beads adds an opulent, exotic flair.  Can you say, Bollywood?!!! :-)

Rings: BA, from TRL, 19 swg, 9/64" ID.

Beads: Faceted glass cylinder beads, strung on SoftFlex wire.

Clasp: 3-point tube slider.

The bracelet measures at 7 3/4" long, just a tad shy of 1" wide, low side-profile at 3/16" thick.

Moorish Rose Cuff

Five days and five nights, that's how long it took me to finish this cuff, my first Moorish Rose, with beads!

Moorish Rose is a chainmaille weave that directly connects 6-ring mobius in sheet form, as first recorded by djgm on MailleArtisans.org.

A relatively straight forward idea, linking mobi to mobi, what's so difficult about it?  Not much, that's if you have a full understanding of mobius weave, which I don't...

But it's so pretty, and there's the detail, step-by-step, fantastic tutorial by Xander; I got to give it a try.  And that's over 5 days ago...

Here's what I ended up with, my first Moorish Rose cuff, with a red drop bead set in the center of every mobius.  Four-row, 1" wide, 7 1/2" long, closes with a 4-ring tube slider.

Not many other chainmaille bracelets took me this long to do.  Granted, a large part of the 5 days was about reading the tutorial, testing rings of various AR's and materials, taking rings apart, fixing mistakes, scouting the net for tips and tricks; but the tough part was the fact that there isn't many Moorish Roses out there; I literally had to piece clues together.

Ahh, but the result is worth it! I like the red beads, they always remind me of pomegranate seeds:-)  

Under bright lights, doesn't it look just like a work of stained glass?!

Specs:

Main body: TRL BA rings, 19 swg, 1/4" ID, actual AR is close to 6.9; a tad too big on their own, but perfect with inset beads; total of 20 columns, over 450 rings.

Clasp point: TRL BA, 19 swg, 3/16" ID, to even out the ends before attaching to the tube slider.

Beads: Glass beads, drop shape, top drilled hole, red with light AB coating, strung on SoftFlex wire.

OK, now that the prototype is done; next will be in stainless steel or niobium.  To be honest, BA is just too weak at this AR, but for testing purpose, works out just fine.

W.H.I.B.U.T. - as of Feb. 7, 2012

Been a while since my last post; not that I've not been hard at work; the fact is, I hardly ever worked (hee, hee...)  I just play with rings, lots and lots of rings:-) Put one ring through a ring, around a ring, a few rings at a time, close the ring; and rinse and repeat and repeat, and repeat....

Razzle Dazzle, Starbuck Takes on All Eight

This is a substantial, one of a kind, statement necklace, not to be ignored or forgotten.

Nearly 4 oz. of sterling silver in 5 different gauges and sizes went into this project. The jump rings are the highest quality by Spiderchain. I was fascinated by her Graduated Serpentine design, and here is my asymmetrical spin on that.

 

The necklace measures at 22 inches long, plus the symbolic "Viper" pendant at 2 inches long, which is my original design with sterling silver and jewelry brass rings.

The sterling silver toggle is secured and user friendly:-)

  

Inspirations

"Razzle Dazzle, Starbuck Takes on All Eight" is inspired by the re-imagined Battlestar Galactica (BSG) Season 1, Episode 4, Act of Contrition. Starbuck's determination to "do her job" also lead her face to face against 8 Cylon Raiders. Tigh uttered in disbelief, "Starbuck is going to take on all eight?" gave me the idea of creating this necklace.

Special Feature

The brass-mixed pendant is a stylized Viper; the 8 chambers of Full Persian above are the 8 "Raiders", each with a red anodized aluminum rings holding in a Swarovski crystal. The asymmetrical graduated Full Persian hints at the more evolved, more organic Raider interior.

Nio Bubbles Earrings

Simple and elegant. My Nio Bubbles earrings are another @daisykreates original. Combining two of my favorite metals, niobium and stainless steel, I aim to create a pair of shoulder-duster length earrings that are light weight, delicate, fun to wear, and eye-catching!


These earrings measure 3 inches long from bottom of the surgical steel ear wires, down to the Swarovski crystals in Jet 2xAB, and each dotted with 5 colorful mobius bubbles in rainbow anodized niobium rings.
